‘Ukraine Is a Historic Opportunity for President Trump’

The head of Ukraine’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee said President Donald Trump has a historic opportunity to become "the greatest president in U.S. history" if he openly supports Kyiv.

“He wants to be great. He wants history to remember him as a great president. Ukraine is his chance to achieve that,” Oleksandr Merezhko, chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, told the Kyiv Independent.

Merezhko referenced President John F. Kennedy’s iconic "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech in 1963 and President Ronald Reagan’s "Tear down this wall" address in 1987 as defining moments in U.S. foreign policy history.

“If President Trump came to Kyiv and said something like, ‘I am Ukrainian,’ or ‘We stand with Ukraine,’ he would secure his place in history—maybe even surpassing Kennedy and Reagan,” Merezhko said. “I believe Trump truly has the chance to become the greatest American president. He could become a symbol.”

The White House has not commented on Merezhko’s remarks.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has pushed to negotiate a peace settlement in Ukraine, but a comprehensive ceasefire remains elusive. So far, only limited agreements, such as halting strikes on energy infrastructure, have been reached.

Analysts say the peace talks are largely stalled, with the status of Crimea—a peninsula Russia annexed in 2014—remaining the biggest sticking point. Trump previously blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for holding up negotiations by refusing to recognize Russian control of Crimea.

On April 26, Trump and Zelensky met briefly on the sidelines of Pope Francis’s funeral at the Vatican. After their meeting, Trump appeared to significantly soften his tone, suggesting that “maybe Russia needs to be treated differently,” hinting at possible additional sanctions and questioning whether President Vladimir Putin truly wants to end the conflict.

Merezhko called the meeting "important," saying it could "open the door to more positive dialogue between the two leaders."

“If Trump seizes this opportunity, he will become great. If not, history may remember him much less kindly,” Merezhko warned.
