The Pentagon confirmed that 44 military helicopters were damaged by a thunderstorm at a base in Colorado in August, with repair costs estimated at a minimum of $29 million.
In a report released on October 28, the Pentagon detailed budget reallocation for fiscal year 2024, revealing that a total of 44 U.S. Army helicopters sustained varying degrees of damage during a thunderstorm at Fort Carson in early August.
The Army has reallocated $29.3 million for repairs, including 13 AH-64D/E attack helicopters, 7 CH-47F, 10 HH-60M, and 14 UH-60L/M. It is unclear if this figure represents the total damage or if additional funds will be required.
The storm, which hit Colorado Springs on August 1, had wind speeds up to 86 km/h. Several helicopters were tipped over by the strong winds, causing significant damage to their rotors, weapon mounts, and tails. No injuries were reported, though the extent of the structural damage remains unknown.
The U.S. Army has faced a series of aviation accidents in recent months, prompting a safety review earlier this year after 12 incidents resulted in 10 deaths.
