U.S. senators Tom Cotton and Lindsey Graham have urged President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to end security protection for several former officials, citing ongoing threats to their safety.
In a January 26 interview, Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican and chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, called on Trump to "reassess" his decision to withdraw security details for former National Security Advisor John Bolton, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Brian Hook, a former senior policy advisor to Pompeo.
These officials were instrumental in planning the January 2020 drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
"Those involved in the operation against Qassem Soleimani continue to face significant threats. That’s a fact," Cotton said. "Iran remains determined to seek retribution against all of these individuals." The senator from Arkansas added that this decision could deter others from advising Trump or executing his policies, particularly on sensitive issues like Iran, China, North Korea, or Mexican criminal cartels.
Senator Lindsey Graham, another Trump ally, also encouraged the president to rethink his actions.
"If there’s a real threat against people who served our government, I wouldn’t want to pull their protection," Graham said. "My concern is that this decision will discourage others from serving in future administrations."
Ongoing Threats and Controversy
Trump has not yet commented on the criticism. His decision to cut security for Bolton, Pompeo, and Hook went into effect last week, despite credible threats from Iran against the three due to their tough stance on Tehran during Trump’s first term.
The Biden administration had extended security protection for these individuals during its tenure, citing ongoing risks.
In addition to these officials, Trump recently ended security for epidemiologist Anthony Fauci, who had faced death threats over his role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Senators Cotton and Graham did not address Fauci's case in their statements to the president.
When questioned about the cuts last week, Trump responded, "Do you want these people to have a large security team protecting them for the rest of their lives? Everything carries some risk."
Political and Personal Disputes
Trump fired Bolton in 2019 and later attempted to block the publication of Bolton’s memoir, alleging it revealed sensitive national security information, though the effort was unsuccessful. Bolton has since become one of Trump’s most vocal critics.
The president has also distanced himself from Pompeo, publicly stating months ago that the former secretary of state would not play a role in his new administration. Last week, Trump removed Hook from the board of the Wilson Center, a national security think tank.
The decisions have sparked significant backlash from lawmakers concerned about the implications for national security and future public service.
