Around 170 million Americans are heading to the polls today to choose between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris in the race for the 47th President of the United States.

Voting began at midnight in the towns of Dixville Notch, Hart's Location, and Millsfield in New Hampshire. Most polling stations across the country opened at 6 AM, though some locations in Vermont allowed voting as early as 5 AM. In Iowa, certain counties will open polls at noon, depending on local election officials.

The tradition of voting on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November has been in place for nearly 180 years. Of the 244 million eligible voters in the United States this year, more than 74 million have already cast their votes early.

Nationwide and battleground state polls indicate a tight race between the Republican candidate, 78-year-old Donald Trump, and the Democratic candidate, 60-year-old Kamala Harris, which could lead to recounts in some areas.

Unlike in 2020, when the pandemic delayed mail-in ballot counting and results took four days to be declared, this year's counting process is expected to be faster. However, the emphasis on accuracy and security in counting may still delay the final results, with the winner likely not announced until the morning of November 6 or even days later.
