A pier collapse in Georgia caused ferry passengers to fall into the water, with at least 7 people killed.
"The pier on Sapelo Island collapsed on the afternoon of October 19, as a crowd gathered to board the ferry, causing at least 20 people to fall into the water. Seven people died, and the injured were taken to the hospital," said Tyler Jones, a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which operates the ferry.
The U.S. Coast Guard deployed helicopters and sonar-equipped boats to search for the missing. Georgia officials are investigating the cause of the accident but have not released any theories. "We urge the people of Georgia to pray for the victims, the missing, and their families," Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X.
The incident occurred during a festival on Sapelo Island honoring the Gullah-Geechee community, descendants of Africans once enslaved on southern U.S. plantations.
Sapelo Island, located off the southeastern U.S. coast, is only accessible by water, with ferry trips to the mainland taking about 20 minutes.
