Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Wins Re-Election

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has secured a second term in office after his center-left Labor Party defeated the conservative Liberal-National coalition in Australia’s national election.

Preliminary results released by the Australian Electoral Commission on Thursday show Labor winning a commanding 68 seats in the House of Representatives, compared to just 22 for the opposition coalition. A party needs 76 seats to form a majority government. While counting is still underway, Australian and international media have projected a clear victory for Labor, noting that the conservative bloc no longer has a path to reclaim the lead.

Albanese declared victory shortly after the projections were made, vowing to guide the country through ongoing global challenges.
“Thank you to the people of Australia for giving us the chance to keep serving this great nation,” he said.

Peter Dutton, leader of the Liberal Party, conceded defeat in a phone call to Albanese and congratulated him on his win.
“We didn’t do well enough in this campaign and the results tonight make that clear. I take full responsibility,” Dutton told supporters.

Celebrations erupted at Labor Party headquarters in Sydney, where supporters cheered, embraced, and honked car horns in the streets following news of the win.

Dutton, a 54-year-old former police officer who has served in parliament for 24 years and briefly held the position of deputy prime minister in 2013, took over the opposition leadership from former Prime Minister Scott Morrison three years ago. Though polling earlier this year placed his party in a competitive position, Dutton suffered a major setback in this election and lost his own seat in Queensland.

Albanese, 62, has led the Labor Party since 2019 and has served as Prime Minister since May 2022. With this victory, he becomes the first Australian prime minister to win back-to-back terms since John Howard in 2004.
