A 530-pound (240 kg) black bear took shelter under a Los Angeles resident's home to escape the raging Eaton Fire, prompting California wildlife officials to use a rotisserie chicken as bait to lure it out.

Samy Arbid returned to his home in Altadena in late January after the fire burned through more than 14,000 acres (5,600 hectares) of land. To his shock, he discovered a massive bear had survived the wildfire by hiding beneath his house.

"We had heard from neighbors that a big bear was roaming the area," Arbid told CNN on February 10. "We never imagined it would be living under our house."

A Surprise Houseguest

Arbid and his wife first noticed strange noises coming from beneath their floor. They set up a security camera and were stunned when they saw a full-grown bear, rather than the small animal they had expected.

Despite the chaos of the Eaton Fire, the bear appeared unharmed and had remained undisturbed while most residents evacuated.

A California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) biologist later explained that smoke doesn’t scare bears as long as they find a safe hiding place.

"If they feel secure, nothing will make them leave," Arbid said.

Eviction Plan: Rotisserie Chicken Bait

With a giant bear living under the house, the local gas company, SoCalGas, refused to restore service, and the Arbids couldn’t turn their power back on until the bear was removed.

CDFW faced a difficult challenge in getting the bear out. Due to its large size, tranquilizers were not an option.

Wildlife biologist Kevin Howells and an eight-person team spent nearly 24 hours trying to coax the bear into a safe trap. Their secret weapon?

"A fresh rotisserie chicken."

The scent of the roasted chicken lured the bear out of its hiding spot, allowing the team to trap, examine, and fit it with a GPS collar before releasing it into Angeles National Forest.
