Belarus Promises to Nominate Trump for Nobel Prize if He Ends Ukraine Conflict

President Lukashenko has announced that Belarus will nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he succeeds in ending the conflict in Ukraine as promised.

"Mr. Trump has pledged to end the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The United States may forget this promise, but Belarus holds out hope that he will fulfill it. If Mr. Trump achieves this, Belarus will propose awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize," President Alexander Lukashenko declared on November 7.

Lukashenko added that not everything "depends solely on Mr. Trump, as peace requires the cooperation of both parties."

Commenting on the results of the U.S. presidential election, Lukashenko said he was indifferent to the outcome, though he expressed his belief that the U.S. "may be ready for a new president of color but is not yet ready for a female president." Republican candidate Donald Trump won the presidential election on November 6 and will return to the White House in January 2025, becoming the first U.S. president in a century to serve two non-consecutive terms.

Throughout his campaign, Trump frequently claimed that the Russia-Ukraine conflict would not have occurred if he were still in office and asserted he could end the war within 24 hours, though he did not provide specific details on how. Following his confirmed victory, the Kremlin expressed skepticism about this possibility, stating that "only time will tell."

On November 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Trump and welcomed his campaign remarks about ending the Ukraine conflict and restoring relations with Russia.

Since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in late February 2022, the U.S. has been Ukraine's strongest supporter. The Biden administration has provided Ukraine with approximately $175 billion in military and economic aid.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to individuals or organizations that make significant contributions to fostering international unity, reducing or disbanding standing armies, and organizing or promoting peace conferences. Eligible nominators include scholars, university professors, scientists, previous Nobel laureates, and parliamentarians.

Several U.S. presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize, including Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1920, Jimmy Carter in 2002, and Barack Obama in 2009.
