President Biden sarcastically responded to Elon Musk's calls for stricter immigration control, pointing out that the billionaire was once an "undocumented worker" when he first came to the U.S.
"The richest man in the world turned out to be an undocumented worker when he first arrived here," Biden said on October 26 during a campaign event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, referring to Musk.
Biden mocked Musk, who opposes "open borders," and referenced a recent Washington Post report revealing that Musk violated immigration laws by starting his business in the U.S. without a work visa.
"He was supposed to be in school, as he came on a student visa, but he didn't attend, breaking the law. Now he talks about undocumented workers flooding the country," Biden added. According to the report, Musk arrived in the U.S. in the early 1990s on a student visa for graduate studies at Stanford but chose to drop out and start his company, Zip2. It wasn't until 1996 that Musk obtained a work visa.
Musk co-founded Zip2 with venture capital funding and eventually sold it in 1999 for around $300 million, using the proceeds to launch ambitious projects like Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). Now the richest person in the world, with a net worth of $274 billion, Musk often criticizes Democratic "open border" policies and agrees with Trump on the issue of undocumented immigration.
Trump's campaign rhetoric suggests he could launch the "largest deportation campaign in U.S. history" if re-elected, ending birthright citizenship and deporting international students. Musk has shared conspiracy theories about undocumented immigrants voting, but studies show that voter fraud is exceedingly rare in the U.S.
