Bill Gates Pledges to Give Away $200 Billion by 2045
Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates has announced a bold new commitment to donate $200 billion through the Gates Foundation by the end of 2045, focusing on tackling poverty, disease, and global inequality.
In a May 8 blog post, the Microsoft co-founder shared his plan to give away nearly all of his personal wealth and to wind down the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation within two decades.
“People will say a lot of things after I die, but I’m determined that one of them won’t be that I died rich,” Gates, 69, wrote. “There are too many pressing problems in the world. I shouldn’t hold onto resources that could be used to help people now.”
While Forbes currently estimates Gates’s net worth at $112 billion, Bloomberg places it at $168 billion. For years, Gates has pledged to give away the majority of his fortune, and in 2022, he publicly stated that his ultimate goal was to drop off the list of the world’s richest individuals. In his latest post, he laid out a clear timeline and financial roadmap for how he plans to spend down his wealth.
According to the plan, the Gates Foundation will officially close on December 31, 2045, after distributing roughly 99% of Gates’s fortune. Since its founding in 2000, the foundation has donated over $100 billion to initiatives including disease eradication, poverty alleviation, climate change mitigation, and expanding access to healthcare and education.
Looking ahead, Gates believes the foundation can double that impact by distributing another $200 billion over the next 20 years — depending on factors such as inflation and market performance. Annual spending will rise from the current $6 billion to $9 billion by 2026, eventually reaching $10 billion in subsequent years.
The foundation’s top priorities through 2045 include eradicating polio and malaria, ending preventable deaths among women and children, and reducing global poverty. Gates emphasized that progress will only be possible through strong partnerships with governments worldwide.
He also voiced concern over shrinking global aid budgets, particularly in the U.S., which he says have been slashed by tens of billions of dollars. “I want to accelerate the distribution of my wealth in response to this troubling trend,” Gates wrote.
“No charitable organization — even one as large as the Gates Foundation — can fill this gap alone,” he added. “It’s unclear whether the world’s richest nations will continue to stand up for the world’s poorest.”
Gates revealed his new giving plan during an event marking the foundation’s 25th anniversary. He co-founded the organization in 2000 with his then-wife Melinda French Gates, with legendary investor Warren Buffett later joining as a major contributor.
Despite its global reach and reputation for driving innovation in public health, the foundation has faced criticism over its immense influence — particularly in areas like vaccine distribution and funding for the World Health Organization — with some calling for greater transparency and accountability.
