Canada Slams Trump’s Offer of Free 'Golden Dome' Missile Shield as ‘Protection Racket’
Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations is pushing back against former President Donald Trump’s controversial offer to include Canada in the U.S. missile shield system for free—if the country agrees to become America’s 51st state.
“This sounds like an invitation to join a protection racket,” Ambassador Bob Rae wrote on X, referring to Trump’s May 27 proposal that Canada could join the so-called “Golden Dome” missile defense program at no cost, but only if it agreed to full political integration with the United States. Otherwise, the price tag: $61 billion.
Rae invoked the United Nations Charter to criticize Trump’s remarks, noting that both the U.S. and Canada are founding signatories of the 1945 treaty. “Article 2 makes it clear: The organization is based on the sovereign equality of all its members. Threats to territorial integrity are prohibited,” he wrote.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has firmly rejected any idea of annexation, stating repeatedly that Canada is—and will remain—an independent and sovereign nation. According to his office, Carney has directly conveyed this stance to Trump during private conversations.
“The Prime Minister has made it clear in every setting: Canada is independent, sovereign, and will remain so,” a spokesperson said.
Despite Trump’s recent push for deeper North American integration, both governments have continued formal discussions on joint security projects, including the missile shield. Carney’s office confirmed that “positive discussions” are ongoing around both existing and future defense cooperation programs.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has reignited tensions with Canada, not only by advocating for annexation but also by imposing tougher border controls and floating aggressive new tariffs on Canadian imports.
The “Golden Dome” missile shield, unveiled by Trump last week, is designed to protect the U.S. from a wide range of enemy threats, including long-range ballistic missiles and hypersonic weapons. The project is estimated to cost $175 billion and is expected to be operational by 2029, near the end of Trump’s current term.
