Canadian Foreign Minister Vows Not to Back Down Against Trump’s Pressure

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks about annexing Canada, warning that even longtime allies are not safe from his economic policies.

"If the U.S. can do this to us, its closest friend, then no one is safe," Joly said on March 12, referring to Trump’s aggressive trade policies and rhetoric toward Canada.

This week, Canada will host G7 foreign ministers for discussions on Ukraine, the Middle East, Haiti, and Venezuela. However, Joly stated that she also plans to raise concerns about trade wars and threats to Canadian sovereignty.

"The only thing consistent in this senseless trade war is Trump's repeated rhetoric about annexing Canada through economic pressure. He has called our border an 'imaginary line' and has repeatedly disrespected our nation, referring to Canada as 'America’s 51st state.' Canadians have made it clear: We will not back down, and we will not be bullied," she emphasized.

Joly is set to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on March 13. Rubio stated that the U.S. will work constructively with G7 allies, partners, and friends.

However, Canada is increasingly concerned that the U.S. may abandon its historic friendship with its northern neighbor. Some officials in Canada have even begun viewing Washington as a "hostile power."

"We cannot understand why Trump is attacking our country, our economy, and our national identity. Canada has always been America’s best friend, neighbor, and ally," Joly added.

During the G7 meetings, Joly plans to explore new defense and military cooperation agreements with European allies, including joint military exercises and arms procurement. Meanwhile, Secretary Rubio said his focus will remain on Ukraine and North American security through the NORAD alliance.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has repeatedly threatened tariffs on Canadian imports, claiming that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state to avoid trade penalties. He has even suggested using economic pressure to force Canada into submission.
