Canadian PM: No Trade Talks Unless U.S. Respects Our Sovereignty

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will not engage in trade negotiations with the United States unless its national sovereignty is respected.

"The U.S. will suffer consequences from its trade actions. That’s one reason I’m confident any discussions we do have will happen with proper respect and scope," Carney said on March 21 during a meeting with provincial leaders in Ottawa.

He emphasized that talks with President Donald Trump’s administration would not move forward until Canada is treated "as a sovereign nation." "That’s not an unreasonable request," Carney added.

The Trump administration recently imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum and has threatened to slap sweeping tariffs on all Canadian imports—and goods from all U.S. trading partners—starting April 2.

President Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of Canada becoming America’s 51st state to avoid tariffs and has even threatened economic pressure to force compliance. On March 21, he doubled down on the proposal, saying he was "completely serious" when suggesting "they should become a U.S. state."

Since taking office on March 14, Prime Minister Carney has yet to speak directly with President Trump. He said he seeks a broad dialogue with Washington on both trade and security, not just "reactive talks about erratic tariffs."

Trump’s near-daily verbal attacks on Canada have sparked public backlash. Many Canadians have canceled trips across the southern border and are boycotting American goods.
