Canadian Prime Minister Invites Zelensky to G7 Summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney has reportedly invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend the G7 summit in Canada this June.

"President Volodymyr Zelensky has received an invitation to the G7 summit in Alberta this June," a senior Canadian official told AFP on March 17, adding that Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with the Ukrainian leader over the weekend.

G7 Summit Amid Divisions Over Ukraine

Canada, which holds the G7 presidency this year, will host the summit from June 15-17 in Kananaskis, Alberta. The G7 includes the U.S., UK, Germany, Japan, France, Canada, and Italy.

Zelensky’s invitation comes as the G7 remains divided on how to handle the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. At last week’s G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Quebec, the Biden administration accused Ukraine of provoking the war—a claim that was met with strong opposition from other G7 members.

Prime Minister Carney, currently visiting Paris and London, confirmed on March 16 that he had spoken with President Zelensky, describing their conversation as focused on Ukraine’s defense efforts and global peace initiatives.

Zelensky Welcomes Canada's Support

President Zelensky later praised Carney for taking the right stance on pressuring Moscow, posting on social media:

"Thank you, Canada, for your unwavering support, including military aid and assistance to our energy sector."

U.S. Shifts Its Approach to Ukraine

Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. has taken a different approach toward Ukraine, moving away from Europe’s stance on the conflict.

The White House has confirmed that President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a phone call on March 18 to discuss a potential ceasefire in Ukraine.
