China has pledged to repatriate undocumented Chinese nationals from the United States following President Donald Trump’s tariff threats against Colombia for refusing deportation flights, Bloomberg reported on January 27.
"China will accept individuals verified as Chinese citizens from the mainland after confirmation," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said during a regular press briefing when asked about Beijing’s stance on accepting undocumented Chinese nationals in the U.S.
"The Chinese government firmly opposes all forms of illegal migration," Mao emphasized.
Repatriation Commitment Amid Growing Numbers
According to U.S. government estimates, there were approximately 210,000 undocumented Chinese nationals in the U.S. as of 2022, including individuals from Hong Kong and Macau. That number is believed to have risen as tens of thousands of people entered the U.S. on Chinese passports without valid documentation after pandemic-era restrictions were lifted.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that China accepted four repatriation flights carrying undocumented Chinese nationals in 2024. This marked a shift after Beijing refused such flights since 2018, a period further extended by COVID-19 border restrictions.
Trump’s Shift in Approach to Beijing
Since returning to the White House, President Trump has taken a less confrontational tone with China. While he has threatened a 10% tariff over Beijing’s inability to stem the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., this is far milder than his earlier campaign rhetoric, where he floated tariffs as high as 60%.
The contrast highlights a more pragmatic approach in Trump’s second term. His administration appears focused on leveraging diplomatic measures rather than escalating economic tensions with Beijing to the extremes seen during his first term.
Trump’s recent aggressive stance on migration, which included threatening Colombia with 50% tariffs over its refusal to accept deportees, is seen as part of his broader strategy to enforce stricter immigration policies globally. China’s commitment to cooperate on deportations comes amid this pressure, signaling Beijing’s willingness to maintain functional bilateral relations while addressing shared challenges.
