China announced on February 4 that it will launch an antitrust investigation into Google and impose new tariffs on a range of American products in response to the Biden administration’s latest trade measures. The move, reported by Bloomberg, signals an escalation in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
According to a statement from China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), regulators will investigate Google for alleged violations of anti-monopoly laws. In addition, Beijing announced a 15% tariff on U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG), along with a 10% tariff on U.S. oil and agricultural equipment.
Beijing’s Response to U.S. Tariffs
China’s decision comes just hours after the U.S. officially enacted a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports under an executive order signed by President Donald Trump. Unlike Mexico and Canada—both of which secured a one-month reprieve from U.S. tariffs—China faced immediate penalties.
According to shipping data, the U.S. supplied approximately 6% of China’s LNG imports last year. The newly announced tariffs could significantly impact American energy exports at a time when global LNG demand is rising.
In a separate statement, China’s Ministry of Finance condemned the U.S. tariffs as a “serious violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.”
"Unilateral tariffs imposed by the United States not only fail to solve its domestic issues but also undermine normal economic and trade cooperation between China and the U.S.," the ministry said.
Trade War Intensifies
Over the weekend, Trump issued a sweeping executive order imposing tariffs on all Chinese exports to the U.S. effective at midnight on February 4 (Eastern Time). He justified the move by accusing China of failing to curb illegal drug exports, particularly fentanyl, which has been linked to the opioid crisis in the U.S.
Trump’s executive order includes provisions to increase tariffs further if China retaliates, setting the stage for an escalating trade conflict.
As tensions rise, analysts warn that both economies could face significant economic consequences, with American consumers likely to see higher prices and global trade relations growing increasingly uncertain.
