Representative Andy Ogles has introduced a resolution to amend the U.S. Constitution, allowing President Donald Trump to serve a third term and continue his bold leadership agenda.

"President Donald Trump has proven himself the only modern leader capable of reversing America’s decline and restoring its greatness. He needs the necessary time to complete this mission," Ogles stated on January 23, as he submitted his proposed resolution to the House of Representatives.

The resolution seeks to amend Section 1 of the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits presidents to two terms.

"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once," the current clause reads.

Under this rule, Trump would be ineligible for a third term. Ogles argues that this restriction should be revised to allow Trump to extend his leadership.

"President Trump’s decisive leadership starkly contrasts the chaos, suffering, and economic decline endured by the American people over the past four years," Ogles explained.

Hurdles to Approval

It remains unclear how much support Ogles’ proposal will garner. Observers note that in today’s divided political climate, the resolution faces significant challenges, even with Republican control of both chambers of Congress.

Constitutional amendments require a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate or approval by two-thirds of state legislatures during a constitutional convention. The amendment would then need ratification by three-fourths of state legislatures or approval in specially convened state conventions—a nearly impossible task in Democratic-led states.

Trump's Remarks

Trump has previously joked about the possibility of a third term. "I don’t think I’ll run again, unless you do something. Unless you say, 'He’s so good, we have to figure something out,'" Trump said during an event, sparking laughter among attendees.

Republicans present at the event confirmed Trump’s comment was meant in jest. Last April, Trump stated he would not pursue a third term if re-elected in 2024.
