President Joe Biden's decision to grant a full and unconditional pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, in a move that contradicts his campaign promises, has sparked outrage among several Democratic lawmakers.
"As a father, I understand his decision. But as someone who wants the American people to trust in the government again, I believe this is a step backward," wrote Democratic Representative Greg Landsman of Ohio on X on November 2, in response to President Biden's controversial announcement.
Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado criticized the decision, stating that it "prioritizes personal interests over duty and erodes the trust of the American people in a justice system that should treat everyone fairly and equally."
Senator Gary Peters of Michigan described the pardon as "an abuse of power," while Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington said Biden made a grave mistake by placing his family "above the law."
Broken Promises Stir Tensions
A former Democratic official told CNN that the backlash within the party might not have been so severe if Biden had not repeatedly pledged during his campaign that he would not pardon his son. "He should have been less self-righteous about it, maybe said something vague like, 'We haven’t even considered that possibility yet,'" the official said.
A former senior White House aide agreed, arguing that Biden could have left the door open rather than firmly closing it throughout the year, only to reverse his stance at the last moment. "He should have just said: 'At this time, I’m undecided. I can’t make that determination right now,'" the aide suggested.
Hunter Biden’s Controversial Past
Hunter Biden, 54, is President Biden's only surviving son following the death of his eldest son, Beau Biden, in 2015 from brain cancer.
Over the years, former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have relentlessly targeted Hunter, accusing him of exploiting his father's political influence for business deals in Ukraine and China. President Biden has consistently defended his son, publicly expressing faith in Hunter's innocence and dismissing the accusations as "political smears."
Mounting Fallout
The controversy surrounding the pardon continues to dominate political discussions, raising questions about accountability and fairness within the justice system. While Biden’s allies argue that the decision was personal and compassionate, critics warn it could severely undermine his legacy and damage public confidence in his leadership.
