Donald Trump concluded his campaign in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a city he calls “special” and believes brings him good fortune.

“Grand Rapids, I want to give you a special greeting. Remember 2016?” Trump told the cheering crowd just past midnight on November 5. His rally marked the final campaign event of this election season and the last of his political career, as he announced he would not run again.

“This has been an incredible journey. In a way, it’s sad because we’re wrapping up, and this is the last event,” Trump said. He has ended his campaigns in Grand Rapids in both 2016 and 2020, citing superstitious belief that it brings him luck. While Republicans traditionally struggle in Michigan, Trump pulled off a surprise win there in 2016. He continues to claim he won in 2020, despite courts rejecting his fraud accusations.

At the start of his speech, Trump declared he was leading Kamala Harris in Michigan, although official results wouldn’t be known until polls closed at 8 PM on November 5. “Let’s pretend we’re losing, so tomorrow we can come out strong,” he said, calling the upcoming election “the greatest political victory in U.S. history.”

Trump discussed immigration, describing it as an “invasion by criminals” and pledged to restore America to “new heights of glory.” “With your votes tomorrow, we can solve the problems our country is facing and elevate America—and the world—to new levels of greatness,” he said.

He also attacked Harris and other Democrats, including President Joe Biden, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Representative Adam Schiff, who led his first impeachment inquiry. “You vote, they can’t do anything, and we win,” Trump told the crowd, wrapping up his nearly two-hour speech. He mentioned holding over 900 rallies this year.

A Michigan victory is crucial for Trump to reclaim the state he turned into a battleground, narrowly defeating Hillary Clinton there in 2016 by 11,000 votes. Meanwhile, Democrats hope to continue their six-year winning streak in Michigan, starting from the 2018 midterms, which would strengthen Harris’s path to victory.

Polls suggest a tight race, with most showing a margin of one or two points, well within the margin of error. By the morning of November 4, over 1.2 million Michigan voters had cast early ballots, and more than two million had voted by mail, underscoring the state’s pivotal role. Both campaigns have heavily focused on Michigan, highlighting its significance in this election.
