Donald Trump Named Time's Person of the Year

Time magazine has named Donald Trump as its Person of the Year for 2024, marking the second time he has received this honor.

"Donald Trump is Time's 2024 Person of the Year for leading a historic comeback, driving an unprecedented political restructuring, reshaping the U.S. presidency, and redefining America's role in the world," the magazine stated in an announcement today.

On the cover image released the same day, Trump is seen wearing a suit and red tie, posing thoughtfully while seated. This is the second time he has been named "Person of the Year" by Time, the first being in 2016.

"Person of the Year is awarded to the individual who has had the most significant impact on shaping the world and the news over the past 12 months. While the decision is often difficult, this year it was not," Time's announcement noted.

According to the magazine, since Trump began his presidential campaign in 2015, no individual has seemingly wielded as much influence on political and historical processes as he has. Trump shocked the world by winning the 2016 election, leading the U.S. through a turbulent term marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide protests. His first term ended with a loss to Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and the Capitol riots of January 2021.

"Many believed we had witnessed the end of Donald Trump. If that was a low point, we are now witnessing his return to prominence," Time remarked.

Trump defeated his Republican rivals in the race for the White House in near-record time. For weeks, the Republican candidate campaigned from a New York courthouse, where he faced 34 felony charges. His debate with President Biden in late June led to Biden exiting the race.

Sixteen days later, Trump survived an assassination attempt while campaigning in Pennsylvania. He went on to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris, who had replaced Biden, in all seven battleground states.

Speaking to Time three weeks after his election victory, Trump appeared more composed than in his March interview. The U.S. president-elect expressed joy in running for office but admitted feeling some sadness after winning, as this marks his final campaign.

"In a way, it's bittersweet because it won't happen again," Trump said.

"Nevertheless, this marks the beginning of a new chapter for the American people and the world. Donald Trump is once again at the center, stronger than ever," Time commented.

This year's shortlist for Time's Person of the Year included U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, billionaire Elon Musk, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Princess Kate Middleton, Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya, U.S. broadcaster Joe Rogan, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's first female president.

Time began naming a "Man of the Year" in 1927. The tradition later expanded to include groups, movements, or ideas that had the most significant global impact each year. The title was officially changed to "Person of the Year" in 1999.

In 2023, Time named artist Taylor Swift as "Person of the Year" for her success in music and her status as an emblem of America's "soft power," making her the first artist to receive the honor.

In 2022, the title went to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the "spirit of Ukraine." Elon Musk was named Person of the Year in 2021, while U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris shared the title in 2020.
