Donald Trump secured victory in the U.S. presidential election after winning key battleground states and surpassing the 270 electoral votes needed. Approximately 160 million American voters cast their ballots on November 5th, with the choice between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris. Another 80 million voters had already participated in early voting. States began counting and releasing results on the evening of the election day.
In the U.S. presidential system, voters indirectly elect the president through the Electoral College, which consists of 535 electors distributed among 50 states and three for Washington, D.C. The candidate who wins the majority of the popular vote in each state typically secures all of that state’s electoral votes. The candidate with at least 270 electoral votes wins the presidency.
Trump quickly led in the first states reporting results, Kentucky and Indiana, clinching victories in Kentucky (11 electoral votes) and Indiana (8 electoral votes), while Harris secured an early win in Vermont (3 electoral votes).
Trump gained momentum by winning several more states, including Florida (30 electoral votes), Tennessee (11 electoral votes), Oklahoma (7 electoral votes), South Carolina (9 votes), and Texas (40 electoral votes). Meanwhile, Harris narrowed the gap when West Coast states closed their polls, adding California (54 electoral votes), Oregon (8 electoral votes), and Washington (12 electoral votes) to her total. Trump also won Idaho (4 electoral votes).
Most of these states voted predictably along party lines, but attention focused on seven critical swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Among these, Pennsylvania (19 electoral votes) was deemed a must-win for both candidates. Trump expressed confidence that winning Pennsylvania would secure his overall victory.
North Carolina was the first swing state to declare a winner, awarding Trump 16 electoral votes. This development weakened hopes among Harris's supporters. Trump’s momentum continued with a victory in Georgia (16 electoral votes), flipping a state he had lost in 2020. The race’s turning point came when Fox News and The Hill projected Trump’s win in Pennsylvania, giving him a decisive edge. Other major outlets, including AP and CNN, held off on confirming the projection.
Trump’s campaign, though confident, did not expect victory to be clinched so quickly. Many aides anticipated a narrower margin or days of uncertainty before a final outcome. In Florida, Trump delivered a 25-minute victory speech, entering the hall with his family as the song "God Bless America" played and supporters chanted “USA, USA!” He thanked his supporters and declared, “We made history,” emphasizing the improbable obstacles they overcame.
Shortly after, AP and other media outlets confirmed Trump’s victories in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (10 electoral votes), bringing his total to 277 electoral votes—enough to secure the presidency.
With this result, Trump broke through two of the traditionally Democratic “blue wall” states. The win marked him as the first U.S. president in over a century to serve two non-consecutive terms.
