The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has dismissed multiple prosecutors from the Washington, D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office who were involved in investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, according to The New York Times.
Senior DOJ official Emil Bove did not provide any evidence suggesting the dismissed prosecutors had violated regulations, engaged in criminal activity, or acted unethically. Instead, Bove cited a legal provision and a statement from President Donald Trump, who claimed that anyone connected to his two impeachment cases had participated in a grave national injustice.
Trump Administration Purge Targets Capitol Riot Investigators
The dismissed prosecutors had been hired to handle cases related to the Capitol riot, which had become the largest criminal investigation in the history of the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Bove argued that hiring these prosecutors had obstructed the authority of U.S. Attorney Ed Martin, whom Trump appointed to oversee the implementation of his policy agenda.
According to CNN, the Trump administration is conducting a broader review of personnel at the DOJ and FBI, aiming to purge individuals who have drawn Trump’s ire. The review could lead to further terminations as early as January 31.
Over the past week, temporary DOJ leadership has been compiling lists of personnel whom Trump views as adversaries for various reasons. FBI agents and analysts involved in the Capitol riot investigation or Trump’s classified documents case have also been warned that they may be asked to resign or face termination.
Mass Firings Extend to FBI Leadership
According to CNN sources, over 10 prosecutors involved in January 6 riot cases had their contracts terminated by January 31.
At the FBI, at least six senior officials were ordered to retire, resign, or were dismissed outright ahead of a February 3 deadline.
These actions underscore the Trump administration’s rapid efforts to fulfill the president’s promise to retaliate against the DOJ and FBI, agencies he has repeatedly accused of being weaponized against him.
Trump has long criticized federal agents involved in the court-approved search of his Mar-a-Lago residence and has denounced the handling of Capitol riot prosecutions, which have resulted in charges against more than 1,600 individuals.
