Electoral College Votes for Trump

The Electoral College across all 50 states convened to cast their votes, officially electing Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States.

On December 17, electors from across the U.S. gathered in their respective state capitals to vote for president. The final tally was 312 electoral votes for Donald Trump and 226 votes for Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Electoral College vote is a constitutionally mandated step in the U.S. presidential election process, held over a month after the nationwide popular vote on November 5. The electors' ballots will be sent to Washington, D.C., on December 25.

On January 6 of the following year, Vice President Kamala Harris, in her capacity as President of the Senate, will preside over a joint session of Congress to certify the Electoral College results. At the conclusion of the session, Harris herself will officially announce Trump’s victory and her own defeat. This marks a rare moment in U.S. history where a presidential candidate must certify their opponent's win. On January 20, 2025, Trump will be inaugurated, completing the transition between administrations.

This year’s Electoral College vote proceeded smoothly, in stark contrast to the chaos four years ago, when Trump and his allies hoped for "faithless electors" to overturn the election results. Some Trump supporters at the time even formed "alternate slates of electors" in an attempt to change the outcome.

Several states this week reported that enhanced security measures for the Electoral College vote were deemed "unnecessary," as Democrats did not contest Trump’s victory.

"Honestly, I forgot this event was happening. It’s a boring event where nothing happens," said Gabriel Sterling, a senior aide to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

However, in Arizona, 11 Republican electors cast their votes at an undisclosed location due to security concerns. The session was livestreamed for public transparency.

Following Trump’s media-declared victory, President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris extended their congratulations and pledged a peaceful transition of power.
