Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has reportedly agreed to pay $10 million to settle a lawsuit related to the banning of former President Donald Trump’s account.
In July 2021, Trump sued Twitter (now X), Facebook, Google, and their executives, accusing them of unlawfully suppressing conservative viewpoints. His Facebook and Instagram accounts were suspended after his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, while he continued to post claims that the 2020 election was rigged.
At the end of January, Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg agreed to pay $25 million to settle the case. According to The Wall Street Journal, X has now become the second platform to reach a financial settlement.
Trump’s team initially considered letting the lawsuit fade, given Musk’s close ties with the former president and his reported $250 million contribution to Trump’s election efforts. However, they ultimately decided to proceed with the settlement.
A spokesperson for X declined to comment.
On February 11, Musk further signaled his alignment with Trump by bringing his 4-year-old son, X Æ A-Xii, to the Oval Office to witness the president sign an executive order granting expanded powers to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, Musk’s ex-girlfriend and the child’s mother, singer Grimes, objected publicly, posting on X: "He shouldn’t be in a setting like this."
