Elon Musk Blasts GOP Tax Bill, Warns of “Grotesque” Debt Surge
Elon Musk is sounding the alarm over a massive Republican-backed tax and spending bill, calling it a “grotesque mistake” that could saddle Americans with unsustainable debt.
“I’m sorry, I can’t stay silent any longer,” Musk wrote on X. “This outrageous, bloated spending bill just passed by the House is a disgrace. Lawmakers who supported it should be ashamed. You knew it was wrong.”
The bill, strongly endorsed by former President Donald Trump, centers on a $4.5 trillion tax cut. Musk warned it could worsen the $36 trillion national debt and balloon the deficit by another $2.5 trillion. “This will crush American citizens,” he added.
In a follow-up post, Musk urged voters to oust lawmakers who “betrayed the American people” in the next election, clearly referencing the 2026 midterms.
The House passed the bill over a week ago, and it’s now under Senate review. Lawmakers from both parties—like Senators Bernie Sanders and Rand Paul—have echoed Musk’s concerns and are urging revisions.
Musk, who previously led the now-disbanded Government Optimization and Efficiency Board (DOGE), had expressed mild concerns about the bill in May. But his June 3 statement marks a sharp escalation.
The bill seeks to offset tax cuts by slashing healthcare and food aid for low-income Americans, tying benefits to employment. It also rolls back green energy incentives introduced under President Biden—potentially harming Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla.
House Speaker: “Disappointed” by Musk’s U-Turn
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed frustration, revealing he had a friendly call with Musk just a day before the outburst. “I explained everything clearly, so his reaction really caught me off guard,” Johnson said. “He’s misunderstanding the bill. This is public policy, not personal interest.”
Johnson emphasized the bill’s broader goals and dismissed Musk’s claim that the legislation is fiscally reckless.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed Musk’s criticism, saying Trump is aware of Musk’s views and remains committed to the bill. “His post doesn’t change the President’s position,” she said.
Senate Majority Whip John Thune labeled the backlash “just a policy disagreement,” adding that Republicans still plan to pass the bill by July 4.
Sources told Politico that White House officials were surprised by Musk’s sharp tone, noting that his earlier critiques were far more reserved.
Analysts suggest Musk’s business interests may be driving the pushback. Cuts to EV subsidies and clean energy programs could directly impact Tesla’s revenue streams.
“When a business leader criticizes legislation, it's worth examining not just their words—but how their bottom line is at stake,” a senior GOP figure told Politico.
