Elon Musk Loses Big in Wisconsin Supreme Court Gamble

Billionaire Elon Musk took a hit in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court race, as his preferred candidate, Republican-backed Brad Schimel, lost to Democrat-endorsed Susan Crawford in the April 1 election—despite millions of dollars in support from Musk and his allies.

The race was triggered by the retirement of liberal Justice Ann Walsh Bradley after three decades on the bench. Crawford’s win ensures the court’s narrow progressive majority remains intact, dashing Republican hopes of tipping the ideological balance.

But according to U.S. media, the real loser may be Musk himself. The tech mogul poured at least $21 million into supporting Schimel’s campaign and boosting voter turnout efforts. In one eyebrow-raising move, Musk randomly awarded $1 million each to two Wisconsin voters who cast ballots for Schimel—sparking accusations of election manipulation.

Crawford and her supporters seized on Musk’s involvement throughout the campaign, portraying it as an unprecedented attempt by a billionaire outsider to “buy the court.” They framed the race as a battle over the integrity of the judiciary.

“Today, the people of Wisconsin stood up against an unprecedented assault on democracy, on fair elections, and on the independence of our Supreme Court,” Crawford said in her victory speech. “They sent a clear message: Justice is not for sale.”

Musk had previously described the race as a “small election with enormous consequences,” arguing that a win for Crawford could allow Democrats to redraw district maps to favor their party. His defeat in Wisconsin marks one of the most high-profile setbacks yet in his growing efforts to influence American politics.

Musk used a similar strategy during the 2024 presidential race, giving cash to voters who backed conservative ballot initiatives. He spent more than $250 million that year to help reelect Donald Trump.

Wisconsin’s race is now the most expensive state supreme court election in U.S. history.
