Elon Musk Pledges Campaign Support to GOP Congressman Opposing Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill”
Elon Musk says he will financially support Rep. Thomas Massie, one of the few Republicans who voted against President Donald Trump’s sweeping new spending bill—nicknamed the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
On July 1, Bryce Lipscomb, a former congressional candidate, posted on social media asking who would donate to Massie’s re-election campaign after his vote against the controversial legislation. Musk replied with a one-word answer: “Me.”
Rep. Massie later shared a Fox News article about Musk’s pledge and responded with praise. Musk replied: “You’re awesome.”
Massie thanked the Tesla CEO and said: “That’s incredibly kind. Thank you! Part of my duty is to stop the government from hurting engineers and entrepreneurs—the people who are actually making the world better. I don’t think enough people appreciate the impact you and your team have had on civilization.”
Massie, a Kentucky Republican known for his libertarian-leaning views, not only opposed Trump’s budget-and-tax package but also criticized the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. He argued the Constitution does not permit the executive branch to “unilaterally launch military action” against sovereign nations unless the U.S. has been attacked.
The “Big, Beautiful Bill,” officially named the Omnibus Budget, Business, and Benefits Act (OBBBA), narrowly passed the Senate on July 1 and is now headed to the House. Supporters are pushing for final approval before the July 4th holiday.
The bill outlines funding priorities for Trump’s second-term agenda, including extending his 2017 tax cuts for individuals and businesses, increasing military spending, and boosting border enforcement.
However, the Congressional Budget Office recently warned the legislation would add roughly $3.3 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. Some Republicans have also raised concerns about the bill’s impact on the national debt and proposed cuts to Medicaid.
As debate heats up in the House, Musk’s endorsement of Massie is being seen as part of a broader clash between populist Republicans aligned with Trump and fiscal conservatives wary of ballooning deficits.
