Elon Musk Steps Down From Trump Administration After Leading Government Efficiency Push
Billionaire Elon Musk announced on May 28 that he is stepping down from his role in the Trump administration, bringing an end to months of spearheading efforts to streamline and downsize the federal government.
“As my time as a special government employee comes to a close, I want to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to help cut wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter), confirming his departure from government service.
Musk added that the mission of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—the reform-focused task force he led—will “continue to grow stronger over time as it becomes embedded within the administration.”
According to White House officials cited by Reuters, Musk began his formal exit on the evening of May 28. President Trump has yet to comment publicly. Musk’s 130-day term as a special government employee officially ends on May 30. Trump administration sources have suggested that Musk would eventually return to the private sector, while DOGE would carry on the structural reform initiatives he launched.
Musk Criticizes House-Passed 'Mega Bill'
In a separate post on May 28, Musk expressed disappointment over the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of a sweeping legislative package that he said could undermine DOGE’s progress. The bill—described by its backers as “big and beautiful”—lays the groundwork for President Trump’s fiscal agenda, including campaign promises on taxes, security, and healthcare.
Key provisions include major tax cuts, increased funding for border security, stricter Medicaid rules, and the rollback of clean energy tax credits. However, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) warned the legislation could add $3.8 trillion to the national debt by 2034.
A High-Profile Appointment
Trump appointed Musk in January to head DOGE, casting him as a reform-minded ally and the largest donor to his re-election campaign. Musk’s mandate: trim government fat, boost efficiency, and modernize bureaucracy.
According to an internal review by Reuters, DOGE’s efforts have already led to an estimated 12% reduction in the federal workforce, eliminating roughly 260,000 government employees through a combination of early retirement offers and threats of layoffs.
While Musk’s departure may close one chapter, Trump administration officials say DOGE will remain active—and that the billionaire’s influence on federal reform may be felt long after his exit.
