EU Official Rejects NATO ‘Closed Door’ for Ukraine

Top EU foreign policy official Kaja Kallas has pushed back against suggestions that Ukraine should abandon its NATO aspirations, accusing U.S. President Donald Trump of siding with Moscow's narrative.

"Why did we join NATO? Because we were worried about Russia. The only truly effective security guarantee is NATO's umbrella," said Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in an interview with AFP on February 27 during her visit to Washington.

Kallas Challenges Trump’s Stance on NATO and Ukraine

Kallas dismissed the Russian claim that Ukraine’s NATO ambitions triggered the war three years ago, as well as Trump’s recent statement that 'this is probably why it all started'.

"These accusations are completely false. This is just Russian propaganda, and we should not believe it," she said. "My question is: why should we give Russia what it wants after everything it has done?"

She also stressed that Europe cannot support a ceasefire deal if Trump excludes them from the Ukraine peace talks.

"We need to be part of these discussions. If not, we cannot offer anything," Kallas stated.

Trump’s NATO Comments Worry Europe

Trump has repeatedly rejected U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine, saying that Europe should take responsibility. He has also suggested that Ukraine should ‘forget about joining NATO.’

Trump’s Private Talks with Putin Raise Concerns

European leaders have grown increasingly uneasy after Trump held direct phone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, launching a Ukraine peace negotiation process without consulting U.S. allies.

So far, U.S. and Russian delegations have met twice—in Saudi Arabia and Turkey—but without any European or Ukrainian representatives.

Trump Threatens Tariffs on Europe

On February 26, Trump accused the EU of exploiting the U.S., saying that the bloc was "created to rip off America" and warning of a 25% tariff on European imports.

Kallas called Trump’s comments "surprising" and stressed that Europe and the U.S. have long shared common values.

She acknowledged that Europe "cannot replace America" in foreign aid contributions, but emphasized that the world expects Europe to take on more responsibility.

"I feel we need to strengthen our geopolitical power. If the U.S. looks inward, Europe will look outward," she concluded.
