Europe Welcomes U.S.-Proposed 30-Day Ceasefire in Ukraine
European leaders have expressed support for the 30-day ceasefire proposal in Ukraine put forward by the United States, calling it a positive step toward resolving the conflict.
"The idea of a 30-day ceasefire is an important and necessary step toward a just peace for Ukraine. The next move now depends on Russian President Vladimir Putin," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on X on March 12.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called the U.S. ceasefire initiative "a positive development," while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk praised it as "an important step toward peace."
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed that the U.S. has resumed military aid to Ukraine via the Jasionka logistics hub in Poland, following negotiations between Washington and Kyiv in Saudi Arabia. He also said Poland was "satisfied" with the latest diplomatic efforts regarding the conflict.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for what he called a "remarkable breakthrough."
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the "progress" made in the negotiations but stressed that Kyiv must receive strong security guarantees in any ceasefire agreement.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the ceasefire's success now "depends on Russia."
Ceasefire Proposal and Diplomatic Efforts
Following U.S.-Ukraine talks in Saudi Arabia on March 11, both sides issued a joint statement confirming that Ukraine was "ready to accept a preliminary ceasefire" under the U.S. initiative. The ceasefire would last 30 days, take immediate effect if Russia agrees, and could be extended.
Washington and Kyiv also pledged to finalize a "comprehensive agreement on Ukraine’s critical mineral resources."
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the peace plan would be sent to Russia through multiple diplomatic channels. Meanwhile, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart in the coming days, while U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is set to travel to Moscow for direct talks with President Putin.
Russia's Response
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a press briefing that Russia is waiting for the U.S. to provide details on the Saudi Arabia talks. He did not rule out the possibility of a direct phone call between Putin and Trump if necessary.
However, earlier in the day, Konstantin Kosachev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Federation Council, dismissed the idea that Washington could dictate ceasefire terms.
"Any agreements and concessions will be determined by Moscow, not the U.S. Real agreements are being shaped on the battlefield, and Washington needs to understand that," Kosachev stated.
