FBI Identifies Suicide Bomber Behind California Fertility Clinic Attack

U.S. authorities have identified the suspect in a suicide bombing at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, as a 25-year-old man motivated by anti-natalist and anti-reproduction beliefs.

The FBI on May 18 named the attacker as Guy Edward Bartkus, a resident of Twentynine Palms in San Bernardino County. He was killed in the blast, which occurred a day earlier in the parking lot outside a reproductive health clinic. The explosion injured at least four others, destroyed a vehicle, shattered windows and doors of nearby buildings, and damaged rooftops in the surrounding area.

"This is the largest-scale explosion we've encountered in Southern California," said Akil Davis, head of the FBI's Los Angeles field office. "The suspect adhered to anti-natalist ideology and targeted a facility specializing in in vitro fertilization (IVF). We are treating this as a deliberate act of domestic terrorism."

All clinic staff and embryos stored on-site were reported safe.

Anti-natalism is a fringe belief that life holds no inherent value and that reproduction should be avoided. According to U.S. Attorney Bilal Essayli, preliminary analysis of the suspect’s writings reveals a strong anti-reproduction stance.

Authorities are currently seeking a warrant to search Bartkus’s home. Investigators believe he attempted to record the bombing and upload the footage online, but the effort was reportedly unsuccessful.

The Trump administration swiftly condemned the attack. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that "violence against a reproductive clinic is absolutely unacceptable," adding that "women and mothers are the heart of America."
