Former White House Press Secretary Accuses Democrats of ‘Betraying’ Biden, Leaves Party
Karine Jean-Pierre, President Joe Biden’s former White House press secretary, has announced she is leaving the Democratic Party, accusing its leadership of turning its back on the president.
Publisher Hachette revealed the decision, stating that Jean-Pierre’s departure stems from what she describes as the party’s “betrayal” of Biden. Her reasoning will be detailed in her upcoming book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, set for release in October.
Jean-Pierre, 50, was the first Black and openly gay person to serve as White House press secretary. During her tenure, she defended the Biden administration’s policies on major issues, including the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.
“This wasn’t an easy decision,” said Hachette in a statement. “The book walks readers through the final three weeks leading up to Biden’s decision to exit the 2024 race — a moment shaped by what Jean-Pierre calls a profound betrayal by the Democratic Party.”
Biden, then 81, dropped out of his reelection campaign following a disastrous debate performance against Republican challenger Donald Trump, which raised widespread concerns about his health and mental acuity.
Jean-Pierre had publicly defended Biden in the days following the debate, even as senior Democratic leaders — including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — urged him to step aside.
She and her communications team later came under scrutiny over whether the White House had hidden signs of Biden’s declining condition. Those suspicions intensified with the release of Original Sin, a book by CNN journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, based on over 200 interviews with lawmakers, campaign insiders, and White House officials. The book raised questions about how much Biden’s team had concealed regarding his health and ability to govern.
The revelations have deepened divisions within the Democratic Party, as many members now attempt to distance themselves from Biden’s legacy. According to Hachette, Jean-Pierre’s book will also challenge what she views as false narratives surrounding the 2024 campaign.
