France Shares Intelligence with Ukraine as U.S. Halts Cooperation

rench officials confirmed that France is sharing intelligence with Ukraine, while the U.S. has suspended such cooperation.

In a March 6 interview with France Inter, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that France, with its independent intelligence capabilities, is providing Ukraine with critical information.

“We are using our intelligence resources to assist the Ukrainians,” Lecornu said.

His statement came just one day after CIA Director John Ratcliffe announced that Washington had temporarily halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Reuters reported that the move is intended to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into cooperating with U.S. President Donald Trump and agreeing to peace talks with Russia.

Lecornu confirmed that the U.S. stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine on the afternoon of March 5. Regarding potential intelligence cooperation between France and the UK, he noted that the situation is “more complex” due to Britain's close ties with the U.S. in intelligence matters.

Washington and London are both members of the Five Eyes, an intelligence alliance that includes the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

According to The Wall Street Journal, an unnamed U.S. official revealed that Washington has stopped providing Ukraine with Russian military target coordinates and ceased warnings about long-range missile and drone attacks from Moscow.

Valerii Kondratiuk, former head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR), confirmed that “everything from the U.S. Department of Defense has been cut off.”

“This primarily affects image-sharing. It’s not a major crisis, as European companies have their own satellites, but not all of them are focused on tracking military movements,” Kondratiuk explained.

The New York Times previously reported that the CIA maintained a significant presence in Ukraine to assist in targeting Russian forces. Some CIA officers were stationed at Ukrainian military bases to evaluate potential Russian targets before strikes, cross-checking intelligence from Kyiv and Washington to ensure accuracy.

U.S. media also reported that the CIA helped Ukraine establish at least three secret signal intelligence bases. These facilities allow Kyiv to intercept Russian communications, reducing Ukraine’s reliance on Washington. The U.S. government has not commented on these reports.

A senior U.S. official told The Wall Street Journal that Washington initially planned to halt intelligence sharing and military aid for one to two weeks to increase pressure on Zelensky.
