France has issued a stern warning to President-elect Donald Trump over his comments suggesting the possibility of using force to take control of Greenland, calling it a threat to the "sovereign borders" of the European Union (EU).
"The European Union will not tolerate any nation, no matter who they are, attacking the sovereign borders of our continent. We are a strong continent, and we must become even stronger," French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said today.
Barrot’s remarks come after Trump recently proposed that the United States should acquire Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark, citing "national security" concerns. During a January 7 press conference, Trump notably refused to rule out the use of military force to secure control of the island.
The French foreign minister described Greenland as "European territory" linked to the EU through Denmark. "If anyone asks me, 'Could the U.S. attack Greenland?' my answer is 'No,'" Barrot stated. "This is a wake-up call. We need to strengthen ourselves militarily and prepare for a world where might often dictates right."
Barrot added that while he does not believe the U.S. is inherently imperialistic, he warned against dismissing such rhetoric. Greenland is the world's largest island, located near North America between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. It has a population of 57,000 and covers an area of approximately 2.16 million square kilometers, making it larger than Mexico and more than three times the size of Texas.
Observers suggest Trump’s interest in Greenland stems not only from its strategic location but also its significant natural resources, including oil, rare earth minerals, and uranium. During his first term, Trump floated the idea of purchasing Greenland, but both its leadership and Denmark rejected the notion outright.
Following Trump’s recent comments, Greenland's leaders reiterated that the island "is not for sale."
Trump’s refusal to rule out military action represents the first time in decades that a U.S. president-elect has openly hinted at using force to expand U.S. territory, a move that contradicts Washington’s long-standing policy of respecting self-determination.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed the United States as Denmark’s "most important and closest ally" and expressed confidence that the U.S. would not resort to military or economic coercion to claim the island.
