French Lawmaker Calls for the Return of the Statue of Liberty

French lawmaker Raphaël Glucksmann has called on the U.S. to return the Statue of Liberty, arguing that America no longer represents the values for which France originally gifted the monument.

"Give us back the Statue of Liberty," Glucksmann declared during a speech at the Place Publique party conference on March 16.

According to Glucksmann, the United States has drifted away from the ideals that inspired France to present the statue as a gift in 1886.

"We gave it to you, but you seem to have disregarded its meaning. So, maybe the statue would be better off returning home," he said.

The Statue of Liberty, dedicated on October 28, 1886, stands 151 feet (46 meters) tall in New York Harbor and was a gift from the people of France to the United States. The statue’s seven-pointed crown represents the rays of the sun spreading freedom across the world, while the broken chains at her feet symbolize the abolition of slavery in America.

Glucksmann, who serves as a French representative in the European Parliament, is a strong supporter of Ukraine and has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump over his recent policy shifts on the Russia-Ukraine war.

The lawmaker also criticized the Trump administration’s budget cuts targeting scientific research institutions in the U.S., suggesting that France would welcome displaced American researchers.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has reduced funding for research programs and is considering cutting hundreds of federal jobs in climate science and medical research.
