French President Calls for Pressure on Russia to Accept Ceasefire
French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Europe and the U.S. to ramp up pressure on Russia to accept a proposed ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Following a virtual meeting on March 15 of pro-Ukraine nations organized by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Macron expressed skepticism about Moscow’s intentions.
“Russia is not giving the impression that it genuinely wants peace,” Macron said.
He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of escalating the war and delaying negotiations until he secures maximum gains.
"Russia must provide a clear response. We must also coordinate with the U.S. to apply strong pressure on Russia to achieve a ceasefire," Macron stated.
Trump's Push for Peace and Ukraine's Support for Ceasefire
Since returning to the White House in January, President Donald Trump has stressed his desire to end the three-year-long war in Ukraine and has taken steps to improve relations with Putin.
Following a heated exchange between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House last month, Kyiv has sought to restore diplomatic ties with Washington.
Ukraine has backed the U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire, while Putin has signaled openness to peace talks, but with conditions experts say could delay negotiations or make a ceasefire unfeasible.
"If Russia is not sincere about peace, President Trump will tighten sanctions and retaliate. This will completely change the dynamics," Macron told French media on March 14 in an interview published on March 15.
Security Guarantees and Plans for Peacekeeping Forces
Macron stated that planning is accelerating among nations willing to provide security guarantees to Ukraine if a ceasefire is signed, with Britain and France leading discussions.
Military leaders from around 30 nations met in Paris on March 11 to discuss the formation of a peacekeeping force in Ukraine and will reconvene on March 20 in the UK.
"Several European countries, and even some outside Europe, have expressed interest" in deploying troops to Ukraine to enforce a future peace agreement with Russia, Macron revealed.
Russia has long opposed the deployment of foreign forces to Ukraine, but Macron dismissed Moscow’s objections, stating:
“If Ukraine requests allied forces on its territory, Russia has no right to accept or reject it.”
