German Finance Minister: Russia Will Not Return to G7

Germany’s Finance Minister Joerg Kukies has ruled out Russia’s return to the G7, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to reinstate Moscow in the group.

"The G7 has been very clear in condemning Russia’s actions in Ukraine, especially on the third anniversary of its invasion. President Trump’s proposal will not receive the necessary consensus," Kukies said in a February 24 interview.

G7 Discusses Seizing Russian Assets for Ukraine Reconstruction

Kukies noted that G7 nations may explore long-term proposals to use $300 billion in frozen Russian assets in Europe to help rebuild Ukraine. However, he stressed that discussions are still in the early stages.

The German finance minister is set to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, on February 25 for a G20 finance ministers’ meeting, where the global economy will be a key topic.

"We need to restart global economic growth," Kukies said, adding that Germany has a lot of work to do.

Trump’s Push to Reinstate Russia in G7 Faces Resistance

Speaking at the White House on February 13, Trump expressed his desire to bring Russia back into the G7, more than a decade after Moscow was suspended following its 2014 annexation of Crimea.

"I think excluding Russian President Vladimir Putin was a mistake," Trump said.

During his first term, Trump previously called for Russia’s reinstatement, but his efforts failed to gain support from other G7 members.

Germany’s Political Shift Amid Coalition Changes

Kukies was appointed Germany’s finance minister in November 2024 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition collapsed. He will remain in office until a new government is formed following the conservative victory in Germany’s February 23 elections.
