While most Republican lawmakers remain reluctant to publicly criticize President Donald Trump, a small but vocal group has begun speaking out more forcefully against his policies and actions.
Murkowski Calls for Republicans to Speak Up
Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed concerns last week about Trump’s administration and recent policy moves, urging her colleagues to voice their unease.
"The situation demands that we speak out and say, ‘This is unlawful. This exceeds executive authority,’" Murkowski said.
At a recent political forum, she slammed the mass firings of federal employees, calling them "reckless" and warning that they had created "fear, anxiety, and harm among public servants."
Murkowski also hinted at potential legal violations by the Trump administration, particularly regarding its freezing of foreign aid, which could violate the Budget Control Act—a law designed to prevent presidents from unilaterally withholding congressionally approved funds.
"This cannot continue," she declared.
Pushback Against Musk’s Federal Workforce Policies
Murkowski doubled down over the weekend, criticizing an email sent by Elon Musk, Trump’s White House "special advisor" and head of the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Musk ordered federal employees to list their work accomplishments from the past week in five bullet points, a move Murkowski dismissed as "absurd."
Though most Republicans have ignored Murkowski’s plea, she has gained some support from moderate GOP figures, including Senator John Curtis, who has also taken aim at Musk’s role in government downsizing.
Appearing on CBS News’ Face the Nation, Curtis condemned Musk’s ultimatum, arguing that it was not the right way to treat federal workers.
"If I could say one thing to Elon Musk, it would be this: Show some compassion," Curtis said. "These are real people. These are real lives. They have mortgages. It’s wrong to say we need to cut jobs and do it in a ruthless way."
"We don’t have to be cold and harsh. Let’s bring some dignity and compassion into this," he added.
GOP Lawmakers Condemn Trump’s Comments on Ukraine
Two Republican House members—Don Bacon and Brian Fitzpatrick—who represent districts Trump lost in the 2024 election, have also voiced strong opposition to the president’s recent statements on Ukraine.
Last week, Trump sparked controversy by claiming Ukraine initiated the war with Russia and calling President Volodymyr Zelensky "an unelected dictator."
Bacon called Trump’s comments "shameful."
"We are better than this," he said, sharing an editorial that accused Trump of wanting Ukrainians to "walk quietly to the gallows and thank him as they are executed on the world stage."
Republican Dissent Over Trump’s UN Vote and Ukraine Deal
When the U.S. voted against a UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Bacon was among the few Republicans who publicly opposed the move.
"As a Republican, I disagree with that vote," he stated.
On February 23, Fitzpatrick criticized Trump’s demand for Ukraine to grant the U.S. mineral extraction rights in exchange for aid, calling it "extortion."
"Forcing Ukraine to pay this price is the height of victim-blaming and extortion," Fitzpatrick wrote.
Fitzpatrick vowed to mobilize opposition against any deal that benefits Russia, saying he believes there are enough bipartisan votes to block it.
"We will use every tool and every vote we have, regardless of personal or political consequences," Fitzpatrick declared. "This is a defining issue. It will shape our legacy."
A Growing Rebellion?
It’s not surprising that these lawmakers are leading the charge against Trump and Musk.
They have long been seen as "black sheep" within the GOP, attempting to distance themselves from the president.
Murkowski predicted that more Republicans will begin pushing back against Trump.
"We must stand up and speak out. We need more voices—not just one or two Republicans," she urged.
