Gunman Opens Fire on Wildland Firefighters in Idaho, Killing Two
IDAHO, USA — At least two firefighters were killed and others may be wounded after gunmen opened fire on a team battling a wildfire in northern Idaho on Saturday, in what local officials described as a "deliberate and brutal ambush."
The shooting occurred in the Canfield Mountain area near Coeur d'Alene as firefighters responded to an active blaze. According to Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris, the team came under heavy gunfire from multiple directions around 2 p.m.
“We don’t yet know if there’s one shooter, two, or even four,” Sheriff Norris told reporters. “Our officers are still under sniper fire. The suspect is showing no sign of surrender. I've instructed my deputies to neutralize the threat the moment they get a clear shot.”
Authorities are investigating whether the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders into a trap. The FBI is reportedly assisting local law enforcement on the scene.
The fire continued to burn as law enforcement engaged in an active gunfight with the assailant(s). The sheriff's office has not released the identities of the victims or confirmed how many others may have been injured.
In response to the attack, the Kootenai County Office of Emergency Management issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the area and urged others to stay away from the scene.
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the assault, calling it “a savage and direct attack on brave men and women who put their lives on the line to protect our communities.” He asked the public to respect the perimeter and allow law enforcement and emergency crews to do their work.
A senior official at the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Secretary Kristi Noem has been briefed on the situation.
The U.S. defines a mass shooting as any incident in which four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter. According to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 189 mass shootings in the United States so far this year.
