Hamas has handed over four Israeli female soldiers held captive to the Red Cross in Gaza, in exchange for Tel Aviv releasing approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners.
The handover took place today as armed Hamas fighters escorted the four captives to a square in Gaza City, where four Red Cross vehicles were waiting. Hamas members, armed and standing in formation, were joined by a crowd of Gaza City residents witnessing the exchange.
After the transfer, the four female soldiers were transported to southern Israel to reunite with their families. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that military medics accompanied the women, who will undergo initial medical check-ups.
The four released soldiers have been identified as Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy (all aged 20), and Liri Albag (aged 19). They had been held captive for over 15 months following a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
Israeli officials reportedly agreed to release 200 Palestinian prisoners as part of the exchange.
The Broader Agreement
This prisoner exchange is part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which took effect on January 19. Mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, the agreement outlines a three-phase process:
- Phase One: Over 33 Israeli captives identified as alive are to be released by Hamas in exchange for approximately 1,900 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel over 42 days.
- Phase Two: Both parties will negotiate the possibility of a permanent end to hostilities.
- Phase Three: Efforts will focus on rebuilding Gaza and returning the remains of deceased hostages.
The first prisoner exchange under this deal occurred on January 19, when three Israeli women were released in return for 90 Palestinian prisoners, most of whom were women and minors.
