Hezbollah Suspected of Firing Rocket at UN Command Headquarters

UNIFIL reported that a rocket, possibly launched by Hezbollah or allied armed groups, struck their headquarters in Naqoura.

"A rocket hit the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters in Naqoura, causing a fire in the vehicle maintenance workshop," UNIFIL announced on October 29.

The rocket reportedly came from the north, likely fired by Hezbollah or a related armed group. UNIFIL emphasized the obligation of Hezbollah and all parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property.

While the exact number of injured soldiers wasn't specified, Austria's Defense Ministry confirmed that eight Austrian UNIFIL soldiers suffered minor injuries. Hezbollah has not commented on the incident. This marks the first time UNIFIL suspects Hezbollah in an attack on its facilities. Previously, UNIFIL had accused the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) of attacks following escalating tensions since late September.

UNIFIL was established in 1978 to monitor Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon after it retaliated against a Palestinian militant attack. Under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, passed in August 2006, UNIFIL and the Lebanese army oversee the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel after a nearly month-long war. UNIFIL currently has about 10,000 troops from 48 contributing countries.
