Hollywood Legend Gene Hackman and Wife Found Dead at Their Home

Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are investigating the sudden deaths of legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, classical pianist Besty Arakawa, 64, after their bodies were discovered in their home on February 26.

Scene of the Discovery

According to CNN on February 27, Hackman was found collapsed in a shoe-changing area near the kitchen, while his wife was discovered in the bathroom, surrounded by prescription pills. A space heater was found near her head, possibly having fallen on her.

The couple’s pet dog was also found dead inside a closet, about 10-12 feet away from Arakawa’s body. The couple had three German Shepherds, with the other two dogs appearing unharmed.

A maintenance worker, who arrived at their home for a scheduled visit, was the first to alert authorities after spotting two motionless bodies through a window. The worker immediately called 911 at around 2:00 PM on February 26.

When police arrived, they found the front door unlocked and no signs of forced entry or burglary. Investigators initially ruled out foul play but later described the deaths as "suspicious in nature," warranting a deeper investigation.

The New Mexico Gas Company conducted tests on gas lines inside and around the property, confirming that no leaks or gas-related hazards were present.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have requested a search warrant to look for flammable substances, controlled medications, weapons, DNA, and any other potential evidence. Toxicology tests will also be conducted to determine whether substances played a role in the deaths.

At a press briefing on February 27, Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Chris Ramirez said that the results of autopsies and toxicology reports will be crucial to understanding what happened. However, it could take four to six weeks before final conclusions are reached.

A Hollywood Icon’s Legacy

Born in California in 1930, Gene Hackman was regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, with a career spanning over 40 years. His most famous films include The French Connection, Bonnie and Clyde, and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Hackman won two Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. After appearing in over 100 films, he retired from acting in 2004.

Beyond Hollywood, Hackman was also a published author, writing several novels, including his last book, Pursuit (2013), a crime thriller.

Family Statement

Hackman was twice married, having three children with his first wife, Faye Maltese. He married Besty Arakawa in 1991, and the couple had lived in New Mexico since the 1980s.

On February 27, Hackman’s daughters and grandchildren released a family statement, saying:

"We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our father, Gene Hackman, and his beloved wife, Betsy. While he was admired by millions worldwide for his brilliant acting career, to us, he was simply Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him dearly."
