India and Pakistan Deploy Over 120 Fighter Jets in Aerial Clash

In a dramatic escalation of regional tensions, India and Pakistan deployed a combined total of 125 fighter jets in a fierce aerial confrontation early May 7, according to a senior Pakistani security official cited by CNN.

The clash, which reportedly lasted over an hour, was described by Pakistani officials as “one of the largest and longest dogfights in modern aviation history.” Warplanes from both sides launched air-to-air missiles—some from distances exceeding 100 miles—yet remained within their respective airspaces to avoid direct border violations.

“Neither India nor Pakistan crossed into the other’s airspace,” the Pakistani official said, referencing the infamous 2019 incident when an Indian MiG-21 was shot down over Pakistani territory and its pilot captured. “Neither side wants a repeat of that humiliation.”

The governments of both countries have yet to publicly comment on the reported engagement.

India reportedly launched "Operation Sindoor" in the early hours of May 7, targeting nine alleged terrorist infrastructure sites inside Pakistani territory and in areas under Islamabad's control in the disputed Kashmir region. New Delhi said the strike was in retaliation for an April 22 attack near Pahalgam that killed 26 people. Indian authorities accused Pakistan of supporting the militant group responsible.

In response, Pakistan confirmed missile strikes hit six locations in Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, resulting in at least 31 civilian deaths. Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said the targets were “entirely civilian” and rejected India's claim of attacking terror infrastructure.

The Pakistani military claimed it had shot down six Indian aircraft during the exchange: three Rafale multirole jets, one MiG-29, one Su-30MKI, and an Israeli-made Heron drone.

The incident marks a significant escalation in one of the world’s most volatile regions, raising concerns over renewed military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
