India and Pakistan Exchange Captured Soldiers Following Ceasefire Agreement

India and Pakistan have exchanged captured soldiers along their tense border, marking a rare moment of cooperation following a fresh ceasefire agreement that ended several days of cross-border hostilities.

The Indian Army confirmed that Purnam Kumar Shaw, a border guard captured by Pakistani Special Forces after reportedly crossing the Line of Control, was handed back at a Joint Check Post in Amritsar, Punjab. The exchange was carried out peacefully, according to a military statement.

Shaw had been detained on April 23 after allegedly straying into Pakistani territory while on duty near the India-Pakistan border in Punjab. Indian officials said the soldier crossed unintentionally while assisting a local farmer. Following Shaw's return, India released a Pakistani commando who had been held for nearly two weeks after being captured near the city of Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan.

Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors escalated after a deadly shooting in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir left 26 people dead. India accused Pakistan of supporting the attackers—a claim Islamabad denied, calling for an independent investigation.

In response, the Indian military launched airstrikes on what it described as "terrorist infrastructure" inside Pakistani territory and parts of Kashmir under Islamabad's control. Pakistan retaliated with its own military campaign, dubbed Operation Bunyanun Marsoos, targeting Indian positions across the border.

After four nights of fighting, both countries agreed to a ceasefire. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later announced that the airstrikes would be paused but warned that operations could resume "at any time" if deemed necessary.

The prisoner exchange is seen as a tentative step toward de-escalation, though analysts caution that the broader conflict remains unresolved, particularly in the disputed Kashmir region.
