India and Pakistan Reach Full, Immediate Ceasefire Under U.S. Mediation
India and Pakistan have agreed to an “immediate and comprehensive ceasefire” following several days of escalating cross-border violence, in a breakthrough facilitated by U.S. diplomacy.
“After a long night of negotiations brokered by the United States, I’m pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on May 10. “Congratulations to both nations for choosing wisdom and reason.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the ceasefire and said both sides had agreed to begin formal negotiations “on key issues at a neutral location.” Rubio praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for their “wisdom, restraint, and leadership in choosing the path of peace.”
Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the ceasefire, stating it was “effective immediately.” “Pakistan remains committed to peace and regional stability without compromising on sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Dar posted on X.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs also confirmed the deal, stating that the ceasefire took effect at 5:00 p.m. IST on May 10.
Rubio had earlier spoken separately with Indian and Pakistani diplomats, urging both sides to de-escalate tensions and establish direct lines of communication to prevent miscalculation. He also spoke with Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, and offered U.S. support as a mediator to help avert further conflict, according to the State Department. It marked Washington’s first formal offer to mediate since hostilities began.
Tensions flared on May 7 when India launched “Operation Sindoor,” striking nine targets it described as “terror infrastructure” in Pakistan and the Pakistan-controlled sector of disputed Kashmir. The move was in response to an April 22 attack near the town of Pahalgam that left 26 people dead. India blamed a Pakistan-backed militant group for the shooting — an allegation Islamabad has denied.
In retaliation, Pakistan launched “Operation Bunyanun Marsoos” on May 10, targeting sites across Indian territory. Pakistan’s Ministry of Defense claimed its forces destroyed a BrahMos missile depot in the Indian city of Beas in Punjab. Pakistan’s military also announced strikes on military airbases in Pathankot and Udhampur, stating the attacks were aimed at facilities used to launch missiles into Pakistani territory.
The ceasefire agreement brings a sudden halt to what many feared could spiral into a broader regional conflict, and reflects renewed diplomatic momentum after weeks of silence. Whether the current calm holds may depend on how quickly both nations can build on the ceasefire with sustained peace talks.
