India Declares Airstrikes on Pakistan a Success Amid Ongoing Tensions

The Indian Air Force (IAF) announced on Saturday that it had successfully executed its objectives during "Operation Sindoor," claiming it had downed several Pakistani aircraft despite a fragile ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

“The Indian Air Force has conducted its assigned missions under Operation Sindoor with precision and professionalism,” the IAF said in a statement. “As the operation is still ongoing, a comprehensive report will be released at an appropriate time.”

Asked about losses, the IAF acknowledged that “casualties are part of any engagement” but confirmed that all Indian pilots had returned safely. The military further claimed that Pakistan had suffered the loss of 35 to 40 personnel and several fighter jets, though no specific details were provided.

A senior Indian defense official told CNN that the country’s air force remains on high alert despite the ceasefire agreed to on May 10. Pakistani officials have not commented on India’s claims. Both nations have accused each other of violating the truce within hours of it taking effect.

Indian Minister of State Vikram Misri stated earlier today that India had carried out retaliatory action after “repeated ceasefire violations” by Pakistan. Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities insisted their forces were observing the ceasefire and responding “with restraint and responsibility” to Indian provocations.

Residents in Indian-controlled villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir reported renewed shelling from Pakistan shortly after the ceasefire announcement, with at least one home reportedly destroyed. However, a senior security official in Pakistan-administered Kashmir later said the situation had “remained relatively calm” since morning, aside from isolated gunfire.

India launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7, targeting nine locations in Pakistani territory and the Pakistan-administered side of Kashmir. New Delhi said the strikes were retaliation for a deadly April 22 shooting near the town of Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians. India accused a Pakistan-backed militant group of carrying out the attack — a claim Islamabad has denied.

In response, Pakistan’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces shot down six Indian military aircraft during the early stages of the conflict, including three Rafale fighters, a MiG-29, a Su-30MKI, and a Heron drone.

The situation quickly escalated into a series of back-and-forth airstrikes near the border. On May 9, India reportedly struck multiple Pakistani airbases, including one just 10 kilometers from Islamabad. In retaliation, Pakistan launched “Operation Bunyanun Marsoos” early the next morning, striking several Indian airfields and claiming to have destroyed a hypersonic missile stockpile in the city of Beas.

The recent round of hostilities has left nearly 70 people dead and forced thousands to flee their homes.
