Leaked images, believed to be of the iPhone 17, suggest that next year’s Apple smartphone will feature a redesigned camera module resembling the Google Pixel 9.
Tech site PhoneArena, citing sources from China’s supply chain, reported that the iPhone 17 will use aluminum as its primary material, with a horizontally aligned camera module at the top. The ultra-wide camera is "positioned in the center, making room for the front lighting structure."
On X (formerly Twitter), many users immediately likened the design to the camera module of the Google Pixel 9, which was launched in August. Others expressed excitement about Apple’s departure from the square camera module seen in current iPhones.
Since the iPhone 11 Pro debuted in 2019, Apple has used a square-shaped camera module housing three lenses arranged in a triangular configuration, replacing the vertically aligned dual-camera setup. Over the past five years, this design has remained unchanged for Apple’s premium iPhones, except for an increase in module size to accommodate larger lenses.
According to PhoneArena, if at least one iPhone model adopts this new camera design, it would mark a significant shift for Apple’s smartphone design after half a decade. However, the outlet noted that the information should be taken as preliminary.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in September 2025 with several notable updates, including an ultra-thin model called the iPhone 17 Air, replacing the current Plus variant. The Pro models will reportedly return to an aluminum chassis with a fresh design. Alongside the new A19 Pro chip and an increased 12 GB of RAM, these models will also feature a 48-megapixel telephoto lens. Additionally, the front camera resolution for all four iPhone 17 models will double to 24 megapixels compared to the previous generation.
