Iran Rejects U.S. Nuclear Talks, Calls Trump’s Proposal a "Deception"

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for nuclear negotiations, dismissing it as a public relations stunt.

"What is the point of negotiating when we know they won’t honor their commitments? This so-called offer for talks is nothing more than an attempt to deceive public opinion," Khamenei said on March 12, referring to a letter sent by President Trump.

On March 7, Trump announced that he had sent a letter to Khamenei, urging Iran to engage in new talks on its nuclear program and warning that Washington could take military action if Tehran refuses.

The letter was delivered to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on March 12 by diplomats from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, Khamenei stated that he had not read it and dismissed any negotiations with the Trump administration, arguing that talks would only lead to more sanctions and additional pressure on Iran because the U.S. always makes excessive demands.

Over the weekend, Khamenei also accused "certain parties" of using "bullying tactics" to pressure Iran into negotiations, a remark widely seen as referring to Trump’s letter.

The White House has not yet responded to Khamenei’s remarks.

Tensions Over Iran’s Nuclear Program

Western nations have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, a charge that Tehran denies. However, Iran has increased uranium enrichment levels to 60% purity, edging closer to the 90% weapons-grade threshold. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly warned that this is a concerning development.

Iran was a signatory to the 2015 nuclear deal—the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—with the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, Russia, and China. The agreement lifted certain economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program.

However, in 2018, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the JCPOA, calling it a "disastrous deal." In response, Iran gradually stopped complying with many of its nuclear commitments.

After beginning his second term, Trump instructed the U.S. delegation at the United Nations to work with allies to restore international sanctions on Iran, further escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.
