Iran Signals Willingness to Resume Nuclear Talks with U.S.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said his country is ready to resolve longstanding differences with the United States and resume nuclear negotiations following a ceasefire agreement with Israel.
In a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, President Pezeshkian expressed openness to renewing diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving stalled nuclear talks with Washington after a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.
“We hope that talks between Iran and the United States will begin soon and lead to a positive outcome,” Pezeshkian said, emphasizing Iran’s desire for a “fair and reasonable agreement” grounded in international law. He added that such a deal should protect the Iranian people’s undeniable rights and contribute to regional peace and development.
Steve Witkoff, President Donald Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, confirmed ongoing communications with Iranian representatives, both directly and through intermediaries.
“I believe these discussions have real potential,” Witkoff said. “We’re optimistic about reaching a long-term peace agreement that can help restore Iran and bring stability to the region.”
He noted that the time is right for both sides to sit down and work toward a comprehensive deal, expressing confidence that a breakthrough between Washington and Tehran is within reach.
Addressing the recent conflict between Iran and Israel, Witkoff declared the fighting over, pointing out that both sides have ceased hostilities since the U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect.
“From the beginning, Iran made it clear that any peace steps would require Israel to halt its military campaign,” he said. “Once Israel and the United States achieved their objectives, President Trump engaged both parties to secure a ceasefire. No one is firing anymore. It’s done.”
U.S. and Iranian delegations have engaged in multiple rounds of talks since April, focusing on Iran’s nuclear program. While the U.S. seeks assurances that Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons, Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear activities are strictly for peaceful purposes.
The breakdown in negotiations earlier this year contributed to Israel launching Operation Rising Lion, a large-scale assault targeting Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure. After nearly two weeks of intense conflict, both countries agreed to the ceasefire pushed forward by President Trump.
