Iran urges Trump to change 'maximum pressure' policy

Iran urges President-elect Donald Trump to reconsider his "maximum pressure" policy imposed on Tehran during his first term.

"Donald Trump must show that he does not follow the flawed policies of the past," said Iranian Vice President for Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif during a press briefing today.

He further stated that "Donald Trump's political approach" towards Iran led to an increase in the country's uranium enrichment levels. "Surely, Donald Trump understands that the maximum pressure policy he initiated raised Iran’s uranium enrichment from 3.5% to 60%. As someone who prides himself on deal-making, Trump should weigh the pros and cons of this policy and consider whether he wants to persist with or revise a damaging approach," the Vice President emphasized.

Zarif, a veteran diplomat and former Foreign Minister of Iran, played a key role in brokering the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and major Western powers. However, the deal collapsed in 2018 after the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew and reinstated severe sanctions on Iran.

In response, Tehran suspended its commitments under the deal and increased uranium enrichment to 60%, while repeatedly denying Western accusations that it seeks to develop nuclear weapons. Uranium must be enriched above 90% to be suitable for weapons-grade use.

During his first term, Trump also ordered the killing of General Qasem Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

On November 7, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei did not directly name Trump but expressed hope that the U.S. President-elect’s return to the White House would lead Washington to "correct past mistakes."

Donald Trump declared on November 5 that he "does not want to harm Iran." "My terms are simple. They cannot have nuclear weapons. I want them to be a successful nation," he stated after casting his vote.
